Confucianism
Résumé
Chosŏn Confucianism is commonly understood as the dominant, uniform ideology that affected and potentially explains all aspects of politics, society, and culture in early modern Korea. Yet, Confucianism is a plurisecular intellectual tradition of multiple dimensions. Shaping the tradition was the material context in which the people applied and adapted it for evolving historical circumstances. This chapter traces the origins and history of Confucianism, focusing on the project developed by Confucian scholar-officials for the Chosŏn state and society. It then presents the major features of the project’s implementation process by examining the resulting anthropological and cultural shifts. Chosŏn Confucianism was a complex and multifaceted phenomenon best addressed through an interdisciplinary approach bridging philosophy, anthropology, sociology, prosopographies, and cultural history.
